History

The Institute of Thermodynamics and Thermal Engineering (ITW), University of Stuttgart, was founded in 1962 and led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Emil Theodor Schmidt (1962-1973) as well as Prof. Dr.-Ing. Erich Hahne (1973-2000). From April 2000 to July 2010, Prof. Dr.-Ing. hab. Hans Müller-Steinhagen was ITW director and at the same time also the director of the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics, an institute operating in related fields at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Since August 2010, Prof. Müller-Steinhagen is the rector of the TU Dresden. Currently, about 35 employees and more than 30 student assistants and master workers are employed at ITW.
