Ice stores are used e.g. in combination with a chiller for air conditioning or in combination with a heat pump for the heating of builidings. They are used as thermal energy stores to increase the availability and safety of the heating and cooling supply.

During loading an ice store, an ice layer forms on the surface of the heat exchanger once the nucleation temperature is reached. The growing ice layer increases the thermal conduction resistance and the loading performance decreases. A large heat exchanger has to be used to freeze the whole ice store with a desired minimum loading power.

With a suitable modification of the heat exchanger surface, the building of ice shall be influenced; thus, the loading performance and the construction of the ice store can be optimized.
